Air brakes work by initiating air pressure at an engine-driven compressor and transmitting the pressure through hoses, reservoirs and control valves to the vehicle’s foundation brakes.
The classroom session is 6.5 hours. Each student is provided with a copy of the Air Brake Manual as a reference and study guide.
After the classroom training, you must participate in the practical training. Once you pass the practical assessment, you will be issued a Notice of Air Brake Program Completion form.
There are 10 modules that will be covered in this course. Each student must successfully complete each module to graduate from Class 1 MELT. The modules will be taught in classroom, in yard, and behind the wheel. This includes the Air Brake Course.
This course has both classroom and practical components that will be delivered in three learning environments: in-class, in-yard (around the vehicle) and in-cab (behind-the-wheel).
Instruction hours are organized as follows:
• 40.50 hours Classroom instruction
• 15.50 hours of in-yard instruction
• 57.00 hours of In-cab training
o Actual drive – 39.00 hours
o Off-road maneuvers – 18.00 hours
• Total training hours – 113.00
In addition, the student must complete the Alberta Air Brake Course.
10 Hours of in vehicle training and the 2 hour truck rental for student road exam.
In truck training - 1 on 1 with a licensed instructor

Shifting Up/Down (13 speed transmission)

A Class 3 driver’s licence permits the operation of any single motor vehicle with three or more axles
1:1 Training with a certified instructor.
In truck training for students who already have their Class 1 or Class 3 license -
1 on 1 with a licensed instructor for Class 1 or 3.
Student can choose between manual or automatic training.
All assessments are 2 hours in length.
The driver evaluation is completed by a senior instructor.
The original evaluation will be provided to the student or employer.

Driving Back To Work Grant:
Unemployed Albertans have an opportunity to start careers as commercial truck drivers through the new Driving Back to Work Grant Program.
Unemployed Albertans can access funding to take the Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) program to earn a Class 1 driver’s licence.
This grant will help to fill an expected shortage of commercial drivers, forecast to be more than 12% by 2023, putting the province’s supply chain at risk. This grant supports Alberta’s Recovery Plan.

There is a 3 percent processing fee on all credit card transactions.
NOTE: Students will be charged for their full lesson if they cancel a lesson in under 24 hours notice as instructors need to be paid for their time.
Students will need to take a drivers knowledge test for both Class 1, Air Brakes, and Class 3.
The Class 3 knowledge test can be taken at any time.
The Class 1 knowledge test can only be completed after the student has successfully completed the full course.
Students will also be required to take a knowledge test after completing the Alberta Air Brake Program.
The fee for the knowledge test is approximately $20 at the registry. You can only take one attempt per day. You will need to bring acceptable ID.
This payment plan allow you to break down the cost of a purchase into a series of biweekly or monthly installments.
