Alberta Air Brake Program

Available every Sunday. Call us for dates!

Air brakes work by initiating air pressure at an engine-driven compressor and transmitting the pressure through hoses, reservoirs and control valves to the vehicle’s foundation brakes.

The classroom session is 6.5 hours. Each student is provided with a copy of the Air Brake Manual as a reference and study guide.

After the classroom training, you must participate in the practical training. Once you pass the practical assessment, you will be issued a Notice of Air Brake Program Completion form.


Class 1 Core Learning Program

$6400

60 hours

plus 8 hours for Air Brake training

Students must have already completed the Class 1 Entry program to register for this course.

 

This course consists of classroom, in-yard and in-cab lessons. 

Once completed, drivers may attempt the Class 1 road test to receive a Class 1 licence, restricted to the province of Alberta.


Class 1 Competence Building Program

$2000

  

Includes (17) in-yard and in-cab lessons conducted by driver training schools AFTER a student has received their restricted licence.  This training is focused on assessing the driver’s skills and targeting additional training where the learner requires it the most.  Following completion of this program, drivers will have the provincial restriction lifted on their licence and may operate across Canada. 


Class 3

10 Hours of in vehicle training and the 2 hour truck rental for student road exam.

 In truck training - 1 on 1 with a licensed instructor
Pre-trip Inspection (under hood, inside cab, circle check, air brake inspection)
City and highway driving
Right & Left Turns
Lane Changes
Shifting Up/Down  (13 speed transmission)
Post trip Inspection
*Automatic and manual transmission available 


 A Class 3 driver’s licence permits the operation of any single motor vehicle with three or more axles 


In Vehicle Hourly Refresher

1:1 Training with a certified instructor.

$120 per hour

 In truck training for students who already have their Class 1 or Class 3 license - 


1 on 1 with a licensed instructor for Class 1 or 3.  

Student can choose between manual or automatic training.  


Driver Evaluation or Assessments

All assessments are 2 hours in length.

$250

The driver evaluation is completed by a senior instructor. 


The original evaluation will be provided to the student or employer.

 Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC) is committing $60 million over 3 years to the Class 1 Learning Pathway including offering incentives for employers to hire and train new drivers.

· The former DBTW Grant has concluded & is being replaced

· The new grant framework features 2 streams:

o The Employer Grant 

 o The Industry Advancement Grant

Eligibility

 

To upgrade to a commercial licence you must:


  • have a full Class 5 driver’s licence
  • be a least 18 years old

Knowledge Tests at an Alberta Registry

Students will need to take a drivers knowledge test for both Class 1, Air Brakes, and Class 3.  


The Class 3 knowledge test can be taken at any time.  


The Class 1 knowledge test can only be completed after the student has successfully completed the theory portion of the course.  


Students will also be required to take a knowledge test after completing the Alberta Air Brake Program.  


The fee for the knowledge test is approximately $20 at the registry.   You can only take one attempt per day.  You will need to bring acceptable ID.
